The Plan

Larry Lively, Superintendent, Dr. Eben Gilbert, Manager of Treatment, and Linda Gilbert, Volunteer, met and discussed the idea of developing an Innovative Series of Programs to benefit the students at Taft Youth Center.

The Philosophy

We believe that by providing these youthful offenders special programs designed to educate, inspire, give hope, broaden their outlook, connect them to folks on the outside, help them develop good citizenship, and provide them opportunities for intergenerational activities and service projects, that their self-worth will be strengthened, their attitudes and beliefs regarding the value of people and property will be enhanced, thus increasing the probability of their success and the safety of people in their communities when they are released from Taft.

The Programs

We have introduced a variety of programs, beginning with a visit by the author Clifton L. Taulbert in October 1998. Mr. Taulbert is the author and editor of several books, one of which became a feature film. Mr. Taulbert is dedicated to helping others build community. A featured speaker at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville in 1998, he donated his time after the festival to spend with the students at Taft. Since that inaugurating event there have been motivational speakers, musicians, theater workshops, visits by the zoo, service projects, and a Laws of Life essay contest. Taft was the launch site in Tennessee for the United Nations International Year of Older Persons, with several seniors as guests for the day. Taft students participated in the USA Weekend Make a Difference Day contest and were selected Regional Winners by The Tennessean. We will continue to post information about our new programs and about the young men of Taft here on this weblog!
